Hometown Hockey in Falls

Queen Victoria Park - Niagara Falls

The Rogers Hometown Hockey stop in Niagara Falls Oct. 7 and 8 will include features on local cancer survivor Alex Luey and NHL legend Derek Sanderson.

After a day of activities on the Saturday, the live broadcast begins at 6:30 on Sunday, followed by a televised game between the New York Rangers and Montreal Canadiens.

More details about the two-day event were released Wednesday by Rogers. Niagara Falls will be the first of 24 Hometown Hockey stops this season. Hosts Ron MacLean and Tara Slone will attend each stop.

MacLean touted Niagara's rich hockey culture as the ideal way to begin the season.

“Niagara Falls is the perfect choice to start another season-long journey exploring Canada's hockey heritage,he said when the Falls visit was announced.

The festival begins at noon Oct. 7 at Queen Victoria Park with games, giveaways and local entertainment. Former Toronto Maple Leaf Rick Vaive will be signing autographs at the Rogers Fan Hub, while kids can take part in the hockey-themed obstacle course Stow n Go. Challenge Pick-up games will be offered at the Tim Hortons Ball Hockey Rink, and fans can get virtual photos with NHL greats at the Sportsnet Augmented Reality Photo Booth.

Sunday's festivities also begin at noon, and continue to the end of the outdoor viewing party at Queen Victoria Park.

The broadcast at 6:30 p.m. will include Niagara Falls-born Sanderson, once the highest paid player in the NHL while a member of the early 70's Boston Bruins. The two-time Stanley Cup winners cautionary tale saw him crash hard and lose everything before becoming a financial adviser for other athletes.

Also featured Sunday will be 13-year-old Alex Luey, who was diagnosed with osteosarcoma cancer last fall. After successful rotationplasty surgery he's preparing a return to the ice with help from the Niagara Falls Flyers Minor Bantam As.

Slone will do a segment on Niagara Falls during the Sunday broadcast.

Performing will be hometown country star Tim Hicks, making his first Niagara Falls appearance since playing Scotiabank Convention Centre in November 2015.

Im so excited to play my hometown of Niagara Falls as part of Rogers Hometown Hockey, said Hicks when contacted Thursday. It's always a pleasure to perform at home and I can't wait to see everyone that comes out. It's a great event to bring the kids to, it's free and fun. See you there!
